Easy, Medium, Hard or Expert? How to Choose Your Sudoku Level
Two puzzles can have the same number of clues and still feel completely different. Difficulty is not about how many numbers are given. It is about which techniques you need to solve it.
What makes a puzzle hard
A puzzle’s level depends on the hardest step needed to finish it. If scanning alone solves it, it is easy. If at some point you need a pair or an X-Wing, it is harder, even if it has plenty of clues.
The levels
- Easy: scanning and singles are enough. Great for learning the rule and warming up.
- Medium: you will need pencil marks and hidden singles. A good daily level for most people.
- Hard: expect pairs and pointing pairs. You will spend time thinking, not just looking.
- Expert: patterns like the X-Wing. Slow, deep and very satisfying.
When to move up
A simple rule: if you finish most puzzles at your level without getting badly stuck, try one level higher. If the new level feels impossible, go back for a week and practice one new technique.
Tip: It is perfectly fine to stay at one level forever. Sudoku is meant to be enjoyed. A relaxing Medium every morning is a wonderful habit.
Mix it up
Many solvers like an Easy puzzle to warm up and a harder one when they have more time. Matching the puzzle to your mood is part of the fun.
