How to Solve Sudoku Faster: 8 Practical Tips
Fast solvers are not rushing. They simply waste fewer moves. These eight habits help you solve faster while making fewer mistakes.
1. Scan before you mark
Do a full scanning pass through 1 to 9 before writing any pencil marks. Easy placements are faster to find by eye.
2. Follow the chain
When you place a number, immediately check the row, column and box it touches. One placement often leads to the next.
3. Work on nearly finished areas
A row with two empty cells is almost solved. Finish it first. Full areas give quick wins.
4. Keep marks in fixed positions
Write each candidate in the same spot of every cell. Your eyes will spot pairs and singles without reading each mark.
5. Look for pairs early
As soon as you see two cells in a unit with the same two candidates, use the naked pair to clear the rest of that unit.
6. Change direction when stuck
If boxes give nothing, switch to rows. If rows give nothing, try columns. A fresh angle often reveals what you missed.
7. Check as you go, not at the end
A quick check of each new number saves you from long searches for a mistake later.
8. Practice the same level daily
Speed comes from repetition. Solving one Medium puzzle a day will make you faster than an occasional Expert puzzle.
