Beyond the Classic: 6 Fun Sudoku Variants
Once you love classic Sudoku, a whole family of related puzzles is waiting. Each keeps the same heart, place every number once, and adds one new idea.
1. Mini Sudoku (4×4 and 6×6)
Smaller grids with numbers 1–4 or 1–6. Perfect for children, beginners or a two-minute break. The logic is exactly the same, just quicker.
2. Diagonal Sudoku (Sudoku X)
The two long diagonals of the grid must also contain 1 to 9 once each. That extra rule gives you more information, and sometimes makes a puzzle easier than it looks.
3. Jigsaw Sudoku
Instead of nine square boxes, the grid is divided into nine irregular shapes. Each shape must still hold 1 to 9. Scanning feels new because the regions twist and turn.
4. Killer Sudoku
Groups of cells, called cages, show a small sum. The numbers in each cage must add up to that sum, with no repeats inside the cage. This is the one variant where a little arithmetic helps. Many Killer puzzles start with very few or no given numbers at all.
5. Samurai Sudoku
Five classic grids overlap in an X shape, sharing their corner boxes. Solving one grid gives you clues for the next. A long, satisfying project for a quiet afternoon.
6. Even-Odd Sudoku
Some cells are shaded to show that they must hold an even number. A small hint that changes how you scan.
Every variant sharpens the same skills you use in classic Sudoku: patience, careful looking and clear logic. Come back to the classic afterwards, and it may feel easier than before.
